Homemade Flea Killer - Sprays, Treatments and Other Tips for Flea Control

Are you looking for tips, ideas and recipes for a homemade flea killer?

Fleas are common parasites that feed on the blood of a host, usually your pet along with your ankles. They attack unseen, and can be more annoying than pretty much anything else you can think of.

Once you have an infestation, it is difficult to entirely eliminate them from your home. Prevention is the best medicine, and this simple saying really holds true when it comes to that pesky little flea.

As people are becoming more and more conscious about what is going into the environment (and their homes), the pet market is noticing a trend away from chemical flea treatments, and a movement towards more natural and organic flea treatments. This article will give you some options to consider when you are contemplating making your own homemade flea killer solutions.

Alcohol

Alcohol is an amazing flea killer. All it takes to kill that annoying flea is to come in contact with alcohol. Here is an excellent mixture that is a first-rate flea control solution:

  • Mix 2 cups of warm water with 1/4 cup of isopropyl rubbing alcohol.

  • Add approximately 5 drops of liquid detergent.

  • Spray or pour this solution directly onto your pet's dry coat as a shampoo. The alcohol in this solution kills the fleas on contact, and the liquid detergent helps in forming a lather on your pet's hair. Rinse well and you have a clean pet with no more fleas.

Citrus Bath

A citrus bath is a refreshing and effective way to help rid and protect your pet from fleas. This homemade flea killer is safe and harmless for both you and your pet, and is less likely to dry out your pet's skin than some other methods. Gather four or five citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, limes or grapefruits, and make either a scented combination of citrus fruits or choose your favorite fruit alone. Slice the peels of the fruit and place the peels in boiling water, letting them boil for a few hours on low heat. Cool and strain the liquid. Use the liquid for bathing your pet.

Vinegar

An old time-tested flea repellant is vinegar, making it a useful weapon when it comes to homemade flea killers. Make an effective flea repellant solution by mixing 2 cups of water with 1 cup of vinegar and 5 drops of liquid dish detergent. Use this mixture as a scrub for your pet. Fleas that have made a home on your pet will be killed instantly. This solution is also a wonderful all around shampoo for your pet's hair.

Carpet Flea Removal Techniques

How about a homemade flea killer for your carpet?

Unfortunately, once fleas have infested your carpet, you might have to call in a professional to help you deal with them. But there are preventative measures that you can take to help ensure that this does not happen. Spraying your carpet on a weekly basis with a vinegar / water mixture is one surefire way to help prevent a flea infestation. Here are some others:

Homemade methods to prevent flea infestations in carpets

  • Another homemade method to kill fleas naturally is to sprinkle Borax on your carpet and rug.

  • Vacuuming your carpets thoroughly on a regular basis helps keep fleas at bay from your pet. Make sure you empty your vacuum bag outside.

  • A unique way to kill fleas naturally is to keep a pan of water with a white towel around it somewhere unobtrusive in the potentially affected room. Add Dawn dishwashing liquid and leave it overnight with a light focused on it. Fleas are attracted to the pan and are killed by the dishwashing liquid in it. An interesting homemade flea killer, isn't it?

Hopefully, you never have to deal with fleas or a flea infestation, but if you do, you now have loads of information on how to get the situation back under control, and how to prevent future infestations on your pet or in your home.
