Homemade Charcoal Grills - Simple Instructions to Make Your Own Grill

Homemade charcoal grills can be a great addition to any party. Plus, they're inexpensive and easy to make.

There are a few ways to make your charcoal grill, so you should choose which type of grill is right for you.

Here are a few simple ways to make your homemade charcoal grill.

Paint tin charcoal grill

This is a simple and inexpensive homemade charcoal grill that you can use anywhere. You only need a few things and you'll probably find that you use it over and over again.

You will need:

  • A clean, medium sized paint tin
  • Charcoal and a way to light it
  • Food for grilling
  • An electric drill

How to do it:

  • Make sure that your paint can is completely cleaned out. You don't want your paint to start on fire or put out toxic fumes. You will also want to remove all labeling from the outside of your paint can.

  • Drill holes in the side of the can (If you prefer some charcoal flavor, you can even drill holes in the bottom of the can, just don't do too many, because this is your cooking surface. The holes in the side of the can will make a fire chamber.

  • Arrange the charcoal briquettes in a small pile on any fire-proof surface. You can put these on blacktop, cement or even dirt; just make sure that there is nothing around your grill that can start on fire.

  • Light the charcoal and let it get hot as you would ordinarily. Place the paint can (upside down) over the charcoal and let the cooking surface get hot.

  • Once the bottom of the paint can is hot, you may want to grease it up a bit and you're ready to start grilling on your homemade charcoal grill.

Drum barrel charcoal grill

Sometimes, you need a lot more cooking surface. For this method, you will do pretty much the same thing as you would with a paint can, but you will also need to add hinges to make a door on your drum barrel so you can easily add charcoal to your homemade grill.

For this type of homemade charcoal grill, you should have:

  • A clean drum grill
  • Reciprocating saw
  • Marker or masking tape
  • Tools for welding
  • Metal bars for grilling surface
  • Hinges
  • Handle
  • Wire mesh

How to make such homemade charcoal grills:

Since homemade drum barrel grills can be used standing upright or cut in half, you should decide how much food you want to cook on your grill before making it, but these instructions will be for one that is upright.

  • Decide if you will have the drum barrel resting on the ground, or if you want it to be above ground. This will determine if you leave the bottom on your drum barrel and also help you to decide whether or not to put legs on your grill. If you are planning to put your grill on the ground, you will need to weld metal bars to the bottom of your grill and drill holes in the bottom for proper ventilation.

  • Measure about a quarter of the barrel from the top and mark it with tape or a marker. This is where you are going to cut it to make the lid of your grill. Once you have cut the top off your barrel, file down any rough edges and attach the handle and hinges to the lid. You will attach it when you're done making the inside of your grill.

  • At the top of your open barrel, weld metal bars into place. You should have at least four of them to ensure that you have a decent surface and that you can fit your charcoal through the spaces.

  • Once you've completed this process, you can add wire mesh to the top for cooking, and to the bottom for a place for the charcoal to sit.

Once you're done, you can light your homemade charcoal grill and use it just like you would any other grill.

So, what are you waiting for? You don't have to spend a ton of money to get a charcoal grill when you can use your skills and make your own homemade charcoal grills.
