Meaningful Christmas Verses - Nice Sayings, Quotes and Poems

Are you looking for some nice Christmas verses to help express the spirit of Christmas?

Probably the most well-known Christmas verse is the poem, "A Visit from St. Nicholas", also known as "Twas the Night Before Christmas".

It was first published in 1823 and is generally attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, although it is also been said that it was written by Henry Livingston, Jr. It consists of 14 verses but the most popular is the first verse:

"Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, - not even a mouse:
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.."

It's amazing to think that even after almost 200 years, this verse is still quoted every year and read to children everywhere.

Here's another vintage Christmas verse by Edgar Guest, first published in the Detroit Free Press in the early 1900's.

"At Christmas
A man is at his finest towards the finish of the year;
He is almost what he should be when the Christmas season's here;
Then he's thinking more of others than he's thought the months before,
And the laughter of his children is a joy worth toiling for.
He is less a selfish creature than at any other time;
When the Christmas spirit rules him he comes close to the sublime.."

If you are looking for nice Christmas verses to add to your cards this year, here are some samples:

"May the wonder
of this Christmas
touch the child
inside your heart."

"Christmas Greetings
we send with cheer
to be with you all
throughout the year.
Christmas Greetings to my friends
at this happy time of year
I'm sending all my love
to those I hold most dear."

For the young and the young at heart, don't forget Dr. Seuss' Grinch, who finally realizes the spirit of Christmas:

"And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzles till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store? What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?"

Some people simply like to insert a Christmas verse into their family Christmas letters, such as this one by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow:

"I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"

Or choose this more modern version by Carolyn Wells:

"I love the Christmas-tide, and yet,
I notice this, each year I live;
I always like the gifts I get,
But how I love the gifts I give!"

And yet another Christmas verse by Ella Wheeler Wilcox:

"When Christmas bells are swinging above the fields of snow, we hear sweet voices ringing from lands of long ago, and etched on vacant places are half-forgotten faces of friends we used to cherish, and loves we used to know."

I'm sure you have some Christmas verses of your own, but don't forget the three most important things about Christmas: "Peace on Earth", "Goodwill to all men", and "Batteries not included".

Remember that a hug is the perfect Christmas gift - one size fits all, and it's easy to return.

Merry Christmas!
