Garden Pond Design - Tips and Ideas You Could Explore

Are you seeking ideas and inspiration for garden pond design?

Ponds have long been popular in gardens all over the US and in many countries around the world. Many nations are famous for their gardens and ponds, like bridges, particular hedge patterns or paths, add warmth and grace to their surroundings.

At one time, the pond was a well thought out project that took time to complete and care for. Today, thanks to materials that are prefabricated and stocked at many stores open to contractor and the public alike, anyone can purchase a kit to put together a pond with little complication.

One of the many great factors about a garden pond is the ambience it brings along with it. Even those from eras gone by knew the very sound of water was relaxing - a natural stress reliever for those who sit in its presence, and nature's way of purifying the air all around it. Whether it be an actual pond with fish, or a water feature, moving water will increase the value of your property.

So, what about garden pond design?

As you learn about garden pond design, know that there are several types of garden ponds - most defined by materials used as a floor or liner, and all have advantages and disadvantages. Some, like earthen ponds, are less expensive but generally require more maintenance. Without liner, there is almost always leakage and the chance of foreign substances in the pond. A pond with liner is what most people opt for. They not only remain inexpensive as well, but if any problems do arise, a pond liner is easily replaced.

There are two types of liner - the flexible and the fiberglass or rigid plastic. Both serve well as liners, but each has drawbacks. The rigid liner can be cracked - not necessarily easily, but it does happen in the winter months often. With the flexible, there is always the possibility of puncture of some type, which can happen from above or beneath the pond.

Once all of that has been decided, begin your plans for garden pond design - function, location, size, type, will there be a fountain, a waterfall or just fish, etc. Also, at this time, make winter plans. While it is true that fish can live under a froze over pond, take into consideration most back yard fish ponds are not all that deep, and frozen over in that case could spell disaster.

If electricity will have to be run for a pump, or the midday sun is scorching, you will need to give extra thought to location. You will also want to consider children - the neighborhood ones as well as your own. And cats, who just happen to love fish and the thrill of the chase.

As part of your thoughts for garden pond design, a plan for plants is important as they will play a vital part in aeration, particularly if there is no pump. And fish enjoy the addition of them as well as other objects in their surroundings. Depending on the type of plants and fish you choose, the pond will require maintenance, so plan for regular pH balance testing along with the time you'll need for cleaning.

Outside of the above, the fish pond can provide a great refuge for local birds and small animals, as well as be a great place for a couple of outdoor chairs - and maybe a cooler and / or a fire pit, so consider these factors, too, as part of your garden pond design plans.
