Home Remedies for Fruit Flies - Simple Solutions to Get Rid of these Pests

Are you looking for some effective home remedies for fruit flies?

If you live anywhere and have ever lived through the summer, then it's likely that you have seen and dealt with annoying fruit flies.

These pests are resilient, and if it looks as if they are coming up from your drain, well, that's because they likely are. Fruit flies don't drown, and unless you take care of the problem now, you'll be dealing with these frustrating, disgusting little guys all summer long.

The good news is that you don't have to load your house down with pesticides, because there are some very effective home remedies for fruit flies that will help you to not only get rid of the ones you have, but also prevent them from mating and coming back.

Prevention

Like most home remedies, a lot of the process has to do with prevention, and dealing with fruit flies is no exception to this rule. So, instead of struggling with them all the time, why not get started preventing them right away?

  • When it comes to using home remedies for fruit flies, start by making sure that all of your drains are clean. Not just clean, but very clean. Get clogs from the elbows and parts of the drain pipes that bend, and use a brush and bleach solution to clean the pipes out. This will keep the fruit flies from having a place to mate and lay eggs. You should also use a drain cleaner about three times a year, but don't rush out to get Drain-o or liquid plumber if you're not comfortable with adding these chemicals to the sewer or your septic tank; consider some organic options such as Bio-Clean to keep your drains and pipes clean. You should also use a mixture of salt, baking soda and white vinegar every week to keep slime from your drains and prevent fruit flies from finding a place to rest.

  • You should make sure to sprinkle the drains and any other place where a fruit fly might rest with baking soda each night. You can even put this in your fruit bowl and on your fruit to make sure that fruit flies don't stick around.

Getting rid of fruit flies

Even despite our best efforts, sometimes we still find these annoying little pests hovering around in the kitchen and bathroom. When this happens, it's time to take control of your home again and get rid of these irritating, gross bugs.

What are some useful home remedies for fruit flies which could help get rid of these pests?

  • Clean your kitchen and get rid of all dirty sponges. You can keep fruit flies from being attracted to them by disinfecting them in the dishwasher regularly. Keep your sinks and drains clean, as well as the rest of your kitchen, and the flies might not stick around.

  • As part of using home remedies for fruit flies, you should also get rid of any over ripe fruit you might have, or store it in the refrigerator to keep the flies away.

  • Fruit flies don't like lavender and basil, so consider keeping these fresheners in pots in your kitchen and bathrooms for a way to keep fruit flies away.

  • Need more home remedies for fruit flies? You can also make a trap for fruit flies by using a beer bottle, a little red or white wine, a banana, bread, apple cider vinegar and some left over beer. Put all your bait into the beer bottle and add some liquid dish soap, honey or vegetable oil around the opening and on the inside of the neck of the bottle. Keep checking the bottle and microwave it every few hours to kill any eggs the flies may have laid. This is a great trap for fruit flies, because they have a hard time getting out, plus, you're killing any eggs they might be laying.

Are you ready to try any of the above home remedies for fruit flies?

Even though it seems as if you can't get rid of fruit flies, you should know that it's much easier to rid your home of them than you might have thought. So what are you waiting for? Make your home fruit fly proof this summer - use home remedies for fruit flies and enjoy the freedom from annoying pests.

All the best!
