Homemade Body Cleanse - Useful Tips and Ideas for Detoxification

Do you wish to learn how to carry out a homemade body cleanse?

While the body is quite capable of functioning within the confines of its own regulatory systems, some individuals advocate for occasional cleanses. Those who engage in body cleansing often report a range of benefits, from weight loss to an increase in energy.

Because of its purported benefits, cleansing appeals to many individuals, but many cleanses available commercially are quite expensive or too extreme to be healthy. For this reason, you may wish to develop your own homemade body cleanse.

The central tenet of any cleanse is, as the name suggests, to cleanse the body of any unwanted substances. To accomplish this, you must focus on consuming a great deal of water, and eating foods that are high in fiber.

Some cleanses limit food in general, and may only allow fruits and vegetables, while others may be liquid-only cleanses. It is not necessarily the most healthy choice to take these drastic approaches to cleansing, so it is advisable to include a number of high fiber foods while perhaps monitoring overall caloric intake, if weight loss is one of your goals. The benefit of high-fiber foods is that they are by and large much healthier in general than foods that lack fiber, so as you are cleansing, you may find yourself losing weight without needing to change overall dietary intake or count calories.

To begin body cleansing at home, you should check food labels to see the fiber in the foods you're eating, as higher fiber content will improve cleansing. For your homemade body cleanse, a few foods to try which are high in fiber include:

  • Whole grain foods - consider whole grain bread, whole grain pasta, whole grain corn bread, whole grain muffins, or products that advertise being made with whole grains or bran.
  • Yogurt with fruit seeds or skins.
  • Raw vegetables
  • Nuts
  • Foods with flax, oatmeal, and / or buckwheat
  • Dried beans, peas, and legumes
  • Dried fruits, berries, and other fruits with skin or seeds
  • Food containing whole coconut
  • Seeds

Conversely, there are some foods that you may want to avoid while carrying out a homemade body cleanse. While certain foods (i.e. highly processed options, foods high in saturated fat) are never quite "good for you", including them in a fast may undermine your goals to jump-start a diet or reset your gastrointestinal tract. Thus, you should make an effort to avoid:

  • Foods based on refined flour - white breads, pastas, and rice
  • Fatty meats
  • Milk and yogurt (limit but do not eliminate - these are important and necessary sources of calcium)
  • Strong cheeses
  • Butter, mayonnaise, vegetable oil, margarine, gravies, dressings

A number of cleanses also involve a laxative component. Whether through a "salt water flush" (i.e. drinking salt water) or over-the-counter laxative products, you will find that many cleansing resources recommend this component. The fact is, for many people, a laxative may not be necessary and could be detrimental. However, for those who feel it to be something that may aid in their homemade body cleanse, it may be beneficial to include a laxative tea in your cleansing plan, as this is one of the more natural ways to get a laxative effect.

Though the body does possess many mechanisms for renewing the digestive tract and "cleansing" itself, there are times when a homemade body cleanse may be exactly what is needed. Be sure to consult a professional before beginning this or any new eating plan, and plan a homemade body cleanse to meet your needs. You may find that a few days of a high-fiber diet and increased hydration are as beneficial as many others have found body cleanses to be!
