Summer Activities for Kids - Keeping the Children Busy and Happy

Do you need some ideas and inspiration for summer activities for kids?

Summer is great at first. The kids are out of school, the usual schedule can be loosened up, and it seems as if endless days spread before you. After a while, though, summer can begin to wear on even the biggest summertime fan, so it's important that you have some summer activities laid out for children of all ages.

Here are some suggestions for summer activities for kids that you can do right from your own home, or get out someplace else.

Out and about

You might not realize it, but your town likely has lots of summer activities for kids, so it's a good idea to check with your parks and recreation to find out what they offer. Usually, the programs are inexpensive and it can be a great day for kids of all ages.

For instance, if your town has a pool, this can be a wonderful way to spend a day without spending a lot of money and, by the time you get home, the kids will likely be exhausted.

You might also want to see what's out there in the way of summer camps. You might be surprised to find that, in your area, there are lots of day camps for everything, ranging from art to science and everything in between. Or, if you have the budget and your little one has the inclination, you might want to consider a sleep away camp.

If it's outdoor activities your child is seeking, you might want to send them to a camp that offers lots of activities such as canoeing, horseback riding and hiking. Your child will come home wiped out, but they will love to be doing something truly different.

For summer activities for kids, you should also consider some of the places that you all would like to go as a family. Plan to visit one place once a week if the budget allows. This can be the beach, a water park, a zoo, or a museum. It can be inexpensive or it can be pricey, so you'll have to see what your budget can manage before you lock it in.

Right at home

You can't be running the roads every day, so consider some things that you can do with your kids at home. These summer activities for kids can be big and complicated or little and fun, depending on what you want to do.

  • If you have yard work to do, plan a yard work day. Get the kids involved in the yard work by giving them their own little part of the yard. Let them spread the soil and plant the flowers that go there and encourage them to do the weeding and watering. It might seem like a big job, but they will love the rewards of this job. Be sure to take a break mid day for a picnic and, if it's hot, give some time in the hose to cool down.

  • Here's another idea for summer activities for kids - you could have a water fun day. Even if you don't have a pool, you're sure to love this. Get out the sprinkler, little pool and Slip n' Slide because you're going to be playing in the water all day long. You can keep your grass happy by not letting running water stay too long, so move it around every couple of hours.

Staying home or headed about, you can find wonderful things to do all summer long. With these ideas for summer activities for kids, you'll keep your children busy and happy and won't have to hear "I'm bored" all summer long.

Have fun!
