Homemade Laminate Wood Floor Cleaner - Simple Recipes You Could Make

Are you thinking of making your own homemade laminate wood floor cleaner?

You wouldn't knowingly spread poison on the floor of your home, but that's what you are doing when you use conventional store-bought laminate wood floor cleaners! Most of them contain products that are harmful for your family's health and the environment.

We've all become used to buying these products and the nifty gadgets that help us to use them, but Environmental Protection Agency studies show that the levels of pollutants inside the home are higher than those outside and can trigger a multitude of allergic reactions. To avoid these hazards and save money, try making your own laminate wood floor cleaner.

First of all, make sure that your floor IS a laminate wood floor, which has a layer of tough melamine on the surface and is durable and easy to clean. Different flooring surfaces need a specific type of cleaner; if you use the wrong one, you can quickly ruin the floor. Test all homemade laminate wood floor cleaners on an inconspicuous area to make sure you have the correct recipe for your floor.

Here are some suggested formulas and recipes for laminate wood floor cleaning agents:

  • 1 cup white vinegar and 4 cups hot water.

  • 2 oz clear dish detergent, such as Ivory, mixed with 2 cups white vinegar, 1 cup of lemon juice and 4 cups hot water. Use a regular mop and bucket.

  • 2 tablespoons ammonia mixed with 1/2 cup rubbing alcohol and 1 teaspoon dish detergent. Add 2 to 3 cups hot water and refill your ready-to-use mop.

  • Add 2 teaspoons baby shampoo to 1 gallon of water. Use a regular mop and bucket.

  • To 3 cups hot water, add 1/4 cup white vinegar, 1/4 cup household ammonia, and 1 teaspoon dish soap. Refill your ready-to-use mop. If using a gallon bucket and mop, fill the bucket with hot water.

If you prefer the convenience of using a spray bottle and mop, then you might prefer the following formula. This recipe makes 1 cup of homemade laminate wood floor cleaner which can also be used as a general household cleaner for kitchens, bathrooms and glass. In addition, it helps to remove tough water stains on shower doors.

    Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup white vinegar
  • 1/3 cup rubbing alcohol
  • 1/3 cup water
  • A few drops of liquid dishwashing soap
  • 2 to 3 drops of essential oils - this helps remove the vinegar odor

Simply combine all the ingredients in a clean spray bottle and spray onto your wood laminate floor and mop dry.

An easy option for a homemade laminate wood floor cleaner is to make a solution of 1 to 2 tablespoons of baby shampoo and one gallon of water. Use with a regular mop and bucket.

    Here is yet another recipe.

    Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup of liquid dishwashing soap
  • 1 to 2 cups water
  • 1 cup lemon juice
  • 2 cups white vinegar

Mix well and use with your regular mop and a bucket. This is also a multi-purpose cleaner and does not need to be rinsed off.

The environmentally safe formulas and recipes for homemade laminate wood floor cleaners listed above will all clean your laminate floors, but make sure to leave the floor damp, not wet, as water standing on the floor will seep into the laminate and can cause damage.

Don't use abrasive cleaners like steel wool or scouring powder on your laminate floor, and don't wax or polish it. Vacuum frequently and wipe with a damp mop. Wipe up any spills immediately. Also, encourage family and visitors to remove their shoes so as to avoid treading grit onto your floors.
