Homemade Tile Grout Cleaner - Simple Natural Recipes

Here, you will learn about how to make your own homemade tile grout cleaner.

It's time to clean the bathroom again and the grout on your tiles looks awful - moldy, dingy and certainly not the color it's supposed to be! You don't want to use harsh chemical cleaners that can be harmful to you and your family or the environment, so why not try one of the following recipes for a natural homemade cleaner?

If you're feeling especially lazy or for an emergency clean up, you can simply grab a tube of white toothpaste and a hard toothbrush (denture toothbrushes are ideal for this) and give the grout a quick scrub. Toothpaste contains pumice, which is a mild abrasive and will whiten the grout without too much effort on your part.

There are many different homemade tile grout cleaner recipes available for you to use that will do the job without leaving chemical odor in your bathroom; instead, they will leave it looking and smelling clean and fresh. You will probably already have the necessary ingredients at home.

The following homemade tile grout cleaner recipe is a very mild one which is suitable for various tile surfaces. You can also use it as a paste, letting it sit on the tile to remove stains from grout.

Ingredients you will need are:

  • 3 parts of baking soda
  • 1 part of water

The amount you prepare will depend on the size of the area which needs to be cleaned.

Simply combine the baking soda and water into a paste, and then apply the mixture onto the grout to be cleaned. Let the mixture sit for roughly ten minutes before rinsing off.

The next home made tile grout cleaner formula uses hydrogen peroxide. This is gentle but it can bleach colored grout, and you should test it on an inconspicuous area if using on marble surfaces.

    Ingredients:

  • 3 parts baking soda
  • 1 part hydrogen peroxide

Mix the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda into a paste and apply to the dirty grout. Let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub and rinse with warm water.

Any homemade tile grout cleaner that contains vinegar or lemon juice should not be used on marble, travertine or limestone tiles, as those ingredients are too acidic and may harm the finish. Vinegar and lemon juice are acidic, while ammonia is alkaline - so the PH in the following recipe should balance, but try it on an inconspicuous corner to test it out before using on the whole area.

A recipe with ammonia and vinegar:

  • 3/4 cups of water
  • 1 tablespoon of ammonia
  • 1 teaspoon of water softener (Calgon works well)
  • 1 tablespoon of white vinegar

Mix the ingredients in a spray bottle, spray onto the grout, and scrub with a toothbrush. Wipe off.

This home made tile grout cleaner recipe also uses vinegar:

  • 1/4 cup of baking soda
  • 1/4 cup of salt
  • 1/4 cup of vinegar

Mix the ingredients together in a small container and apply the mixture to grout. Let it sit for about 20 minutes and then rinse well with warm water. Do not allow the mixture to dry out.

This easy tile grout cleaner recipe contains bleach, so it should only be used on white or pale colored grout.

    Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cups of baking soda
  • 1/4 cup of bleach

Simply mix the two ingredients in a clean container and then apply the mixture to grout with a toothbrush. The solution can be diluted with water if you wish to reduce the strength of the bleach. You can let this sit on the grout for a few minutes until the grout is clean again.

You can also make this recipe using lemon juice instead of bleach, but this is also an acidic mixture and should not be used on travertine or marble tiles. Simply mix into a paste and apply to the grout. Let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub with a toothbrush and rinse well with warm water.

If you have mildewed grout, then the following homemade tile grout cleaner recipe will remove the mildew: (same warning as above applies to marble, travertine or limestone tiles, because of the presence of acidic ingredients)

  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/4 cup of white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup of bleach
  • 1/4 cup of alcohol

Mix the ingredients together, then apply the tile grout cleaner mixture to grout. Let it sit for about 20 to 30 minutes, then scrub and rinse well with warm soapy water. You can do this again when the mildew comes back.

Remember to always use rubber gloves when using bleach and ammonia, and make sure the area is well-ventilated.
