Requirements to Become a Teacher - Brief Discussion

Do you wish to learn about the requirements to become a teacher?

The primary requirement for becoming a teacher is to have a love of children and the resolve to ensure that they shall receive the best education that the school system can offer. Of course, a teacher also needs to have enduring patience, compassion and a great sense of humor!

The legal requirements to become a teacher vary from state to state and country to country. In the USA, you will need a Bachelor's degree, which can be obtained by studying online at an accredited university or by attending college.

The Department of Education in each state sets the requirements for the teacher license, with some requiring a Master's degree to be obtained within one to five years from the time of hiring.

However, all certifying bodies require that you at least have a Bachelor's degree, with some requiring that you also have a Master's degree or are planning to earn one within five years. In the USA, you will also need to pass an approved exam, the most common being the Praxis, have also passed certain education courses, and have some student teaching experience.

Each state's Department of Education sets the requirements to become a teacher for that particular state. If a teacher plans to move to another state, then he or she can check to see if there is a reciprocity agreement between the two states. If this is so, then it should be possible to transfer the license. Be aware that some states judge this license to be merely provisional and require that the teacher obtain certification in the new state within two years.

Once you are certified by one state and have been a teacher for three years, you can apply for and earn national certification, which will enable you to teach nationwide, but the criteria for teaching in each state must still be followed.

Requirements to become a teacher for a particular grade or a certain subject necessitates that the teacher must earn the appropriate credentials as laid down by the state's Department of Education.

Teacher certification requirements depend on the grade level that they plan to teach. Elementary school teachers are mostly generalists, meaning they can teach multiple subjects to young children. Middle school teachers can either be generalists or specialize in the subject they plan to teach, but if they are going to teach older children, then the teachers must obtain additional certifications which will vary according to their chosen subject.

Because of the No Child Left Behind law, high school teachers have to become certified to teach older children in grades 7 to 12. They can do this by adding subject endorsements to their teaching certificates. Specialized teachers such as counselors, reading coaches and those who help with speech therapy can usually obtain certification according to the subject they wish to teach.

Requirements to become a teacher for Charter schools can differ from state to state, and teachers can be hired in accordance with the school's own standards. Teachers should check with the state Department of Education to find each school's particular requirements.

Private schools are allowed to set their own standards and requirements to become a teacher, and are not regulated by the state's Department of Education.

As you can see, the requirements to become a teacher vary from state to state and from school to school. If you plan to become a teacher, you will have to ensure that you have the necessary qualifications you need to begin your career and pass on your knowledge to the next generation.

All the best!
