Teacher Sample Resume - Important Pointers and an Example Resume You Could Use

Are you looking for a useful teacher sample resume to help you with your job application?

Here are some important tips and pointers to guide you, plus a resume sample below which you could use.

Congrats! You've graduated! Now what? Your first stop should probably be to write a resume.

If you plan on a career in elementary, middle or high school teaching, you'll need a resume to get the principal's attention. Teacher resumes should follow formatting rules and best practice just like other types of resumes. But, in addition, they also need some teacher-specific information.

The teacher resume should show that the applicant is qualified and certified, plus give examples of good teaching. Beginning teachers should have resumes of no more than one page. After you've acquired two or more years' experience, the resume can be longer.

Always tailor your resume to suit the hiring practices of the employer. This goes for schoolteacher resumes as well. The city department of education where you're looking for work may have different hiring practices than the next county over.

You may consider yourself whether or not to include non-teaching work experience. Is it relevant? Were you very young when you did it? If you've had non-teaching experience for ten years, then include it, as otherwise, you'd have a huge gap in your employment history.

The four main elements required in a teacher sample resume are (in the following order):

  • Identity information: Name, address, phone number, email address.

  • Certification: List certifications, certificate numbers, and any endorsements.

  • Teaching Experience: Include Job title(s), Where you worked (school name and address), and dates. Describe your classroom experience. Be sure to include information about classroom management skills, teaching methods, special needs experience, and parent interaction.

  • Related experience: List all other work you've done here (stay as relevant as possible).

Additional / optional areas to include in a teacher sample resume are:

  • Career Objective: eg. "To obtain a History Teacher position in a Middle School".

  • Honors and Activities: scholarships, awards, activities, clubs, etc.

  • Special skills: eg. languages.

  • Continuing Professional Development: eg. special workshops, seminars and further education outside of college.

  • Memberships: to professional bodies.
