Some Common Teacher Interview Questions

Are you wondering what some common teacher interview questions are?

Deciding to become a teacher was a major decision in your life, now you have to find a school that will hire you. It is not always your credentials that decide whether or not you get hired as a teacher, but the interview questions that can make the difference.

When it comes to teacher interview questions, there are many different ways that the interviewer can go, so the most important thing to keep in mind is to relax and do not think about the process as being personal in any way, shape, or form.

The administration staff that is responsible for hiring teachers have a great responsibility. The questions that they ask can bring a great deal of insight into each candidate's background, goals, and temperament, which will certainly be helpful in deciding who will become a great teacher and which ones will have trouble adapting to a classroom setting.

Below are some of the most common, and telling, teacher interview questions that you may hear during an interview. For interviewers, these can illicit the answers that will reveal a great deal about the character of your candidates.

  • What is your greatest strength? - This question can seem like a loaded one, but do not try to answer in the manner you think the person wants to hear, but rather be completely honest. If your greatest strength is interior decorating, say that. The truth is never the wrong answer.

  • What is your biggest weakness? - Most people do not like to share their weaknesses, but again, honesty will go a long way. If your biggest weakness happens to be working in a team atmosphere, though, you may want to keep that one to yourself and work on it for the future.

  • How would you handle classroom discipline? - How you handle discipline in a classroom setting can tell a school a great deal about your assets and liabilities when it comes to you being a teacher.

  • Why did you want to become a teacher? - This teacher interview question is where you sell yourself. Don't underplay this one. There is a reason that you want to become a teacher, and if you stick to your honest answer, your passion for the profession will shine through, regardless of anything else going on in the interview and regardless of the nerves you may be feeling at the time.

  • If a student of yours told you that you were the worst teacher she ever had, how would you react? - You are going to face criticism. Sometimes, it will come from the students. Sometimes, it will come from the parents. Sometimes, it will come from the administration. How you deal with criticism can go a long way toward determining your role as a positive teacher in the system.

These are just a few sample teacher interview questions that you may face, or could use, during the interview process. Seeing them and thinking about them before you step into that interview can help you remain calm and relaxed and avoid the appearance of trying to search out the answers while you are being carefully studied. There are hundreds of potential teacher interview questions, though, so don't be surprised if you never get any of these.
