  • Valentine's Day was first declared to fall on February 14 in the year 498.

  • Pope Gelasius was the one who decreed the official start of the holiday.

  • In the eighteenth century, it became customary for men and women to exchange small tokens of affection for each other.

  • Handwritten notes were some of the earliest objects of affection exchanged.

  • The first official Valentine's Day gift was sent by the Duke of Orleans to his wife, after he was captured in 1415. That's a Valentine's Day fact we're sure you didn't know!

  • When it comes to flowers, men buy almost 75% of them at Valentine's Day.

  • Ancient cultures believed that the soul lived in the heart of a human being, therefore the heart is the most common symbol today associated with love.

  • About 4% of pet owners actually prefer to give their pet a Valentine's Day gift rather than give one to their loved one. They feel that the pet is more appreciative of it.

  • Now here's another interesting Valentine's Day fact - during the Middle Ages, it was believed that the first person you met of the opposite sex on Valentine's Day would be the person you would marry.

  • The red rose was the favorite flower of the ancient goddess Venus. This is why the red rose is often associated with love and is the highest selling flower on Valentine's Day.

  • Richard Cadbury introduced the first Valentine's Day box of chocolates in 1868.

These are just a few of the many wonderful Valentine's Day facts that surround this holiday. While it's easy to assume that some of the holidays that we celebrate in modern times were created relatively recently, especially given the consumer-driven marketing that surrounds them, knowing some of these facts can help keep the pessimism about the holiday at bay.
