If you're at a complete loss, or if the person that you are buying for seems to have everything, then traditional gift certificates are almost always appreciated. For instance, if you are providing a certificate to Williams and Sonoma, then include an inexpensive mixing bowl, mixing spoon, and magnet to the gift set as well.
Above all, when considering 50th birthday present ideas, keep in mind that you are purchasing for the person and not for the age itself. Therefore, when you're trying to decide what to get, make sure that it fits the personality and individuality of the person that you are buying for.
