Choosing Graduation Cake Designs - Useful Ideas and Tips
Are you seeking ideas and inspiration for graduation cake designs?
Graduation cakes can be virtually anything the mind can imagine. They can be whimsical - I'm free!; they can be funny - a decorated graduate holding a lap sized chalk board that says: I'm history, Teach!; or they can be more down to earth - Best of Luck, Graduate. Just imagine everything in between!

The ideal cake does not have a specific size or shape - be it sheet, layer, or round, oblong or square. If the shape you want can be baked in, you are in luck. Think what opportunities are suddenly opened up to you for graduation cake designs - certainly, all sorts of scenes on all sorts of levels.
Long flat sheet cakes can be baked, cooled and rolled to be decorated as scrolls or diplomas. Also, several different shapes can be baked and used to create specific themes or scenes from the graduates' school days. And don't forget a giant cookie can be used as a base for the whole thing.
An example graduation cake design would be a large sheet cake for a base, a smaller sheet cake laid slightly ajar on top of that, and a small round layer on the top. Simple enough, and so is the icing. Ice the first level to represent a dark colored book (you can print ENGLISH on the side). Ice the second book in a light color (print MATH on the edge of that layer). Ice the top in black or dark blue to match the color of the graduating robes.
This top piece will represent the cap and will look great when a square piece of cardboard is iced to match, placed on top of the round layer and decorated with a tassel. Don't forget the year on the side of the round layer.
When brainstorming graduation cake designs, keep this in mind - a cake for the graduate can reflect something of that person either from the past or for the future. Online sites such as Wilton's cake decorating and baking supplies has a variety of cake ideas - again from the least efforts to the very elaborate. If your budget is pressed, choose something simple, but bring in favorite colors or perhaps a picture with fellow graduates.
If you are doing the cake yourself, several sites have detailed recipes and pictures of graduation cake designs as guides. And hey, who can't bake a cake - simple outline of a diploma, a cap with tassel; or at the very least, a couple of batches of cupcakes with candy confetti as the simple decorations, huh?
Nowadays, children graduate from kindergarten and the cake for their friends would be much different than for those graduating high school. For instance, while a cap and tassel can be used for both age groups, the five year olds would be more appropriately carried out in a whimsical manner.
One final note regarding graduation cake designs: The cake and icing both should be in flavors the graduate likes, barring flavors such as licorice, coconut or a fruit, as too many might not appreciate the taste. Use edible icing tubes to design a likeness or to do a caricature of your graduate. Special messages can be printed on a sheet cake for a personal touch - a pep talk, so to speak. 'Shoot for the moon cuz you can't go wrong hanging with the stars!'
