Thanksgiving Crafts for Children - Great Handicraft Projects for the Kids

Are you seeking ideas and inspiration for Thanksgiving crafts for children?

The Thanksgiving holiday is approaching and you have so much to do; you would like to really involve your children in the celebration, and what better way to do that than to find some Thanksgiving crafts for children that they can make?

An easy craft for the kids to do would be to make special Thanksgiving napkin rings for the table. These can be as simple as taking paper towel or toilet roll cardboard tubes, cutting them into 1" deep rings and letting the children decorate them. The napkin rings can be painted the day before and the final decorating touches applied on Thanksgiving Day - which will keep the children occupied while you prepare the food.

If you are using fabric napkins, make sure your napkin rings are wide enough to hold the rolled up napkins; if you're using paper napkins, then this won't be a problem. However, if the cardboard rings aren't large enough for your fabric napkins, then use 2" white tubing from the hardware store and have an adult cut it to the right size. The rings can be decorated with Thanksgiving-themed stickers or construction paper cutout designs, and will be sure to amuse and delight the dinner guests.

Along similar lines, another of the cute Thanksgiving crafts for children is to have them design and make place cards for the table. Use white or orange cardstock and cut into 4" x 4" rectangles which will then be folded in half. Decorate the 'front' half of the place card with either Thanksgiving stickers or the children's own designs and have them write the name of a guest on the card - it really doesn't matter if their writing isn't perfect, and in fact will only add to the charm of the place cards.

Thanksgiving holiday cards are another of the possible Thanksgiving crafts for children, and they can be used for card exchanges at school or to send to family and friends. The whole family can join in this activity and give help to younger children who want to participate, and whose grandparents will treasure their home-made cards forever.

For these Thanksgiving crafts for children, set aside an evening to make the cards and have ready plenty of decorating supplies, such as stickers, rubber stamps, stencils and paint, white glue, glitter (orange and red, of course), and colored construction paper for making 'hand turkey' cards.

For anyone who doesn't know what a 'hand turkey' is, you simply have your child place his hand onto brown construction paper, spread his fingers as far apart as they'll go and draw around them. The thumb becomes the turkey's head and the fingers represent the feathers. You can curl the feathers by rolling them around a pencil - and don't glue them down so that you create a 3-dimensional effect.

To make a Thanksgiving message, simply type it on your computer in a suitable font, print it onto colored paper, then cut out the letters and glue onto the card. If you have an electronic cutting machine that is typically used for scrapbooking, then you can create many unique designs very easily.

Very easy Thanksgiving crafts for children to make are candle holders made from small glass jars (empty baby food jars would be the perfect size for this project), some Thanksgiving- themed stickers, white glue, ribbon or raffia in Fall colors, glitter (of course!) and votive candles in Fall colors and scents.

For these Thanksgiving crafts for children, first apply the stickers to the jars and press them down firmly on all sides, making sure there are no air bubbles underneath. Use a paintbrush to cover the entire jar with white glue and dust with glitter if desired. Leave to dry overnight then tie the ribbon or raffia around the neck of the jar to hide the 'threads' for the lid. Place the candle inside and use to decorate the Thanksgiving table. These are so easy and inexpensive to make that you could make one to place at each table setting.

Another of the simple Thanksgiving crafts for children to make is a garland of leaves to string across a window or door. You will need construction paper in Fall colors and a length of heavy twine or yarn that will be long enough for the purpose.

First draw a selection of large leaves on the construction paper. You can do this freehand or download leaf templates from one of several online sites. Make sure that the 'stems' of your leaves are long enough to be folded in half and glued or stapled to make into a loop for the string to go through, and also make them wide enough so that the leaves won't fall off. Use different colors and several leaf shapes to make the garland more interesting.

For these Thanksgiving crafts for children, simply make the leaves and thread the string through the stem loops - you can use a dab of white glue to keep them in place on the string and to make sure they stay separated from each other. Hang in place and let the kids wait for the compliments on their handiwork.

With these ideas for Thanksgiving crafts for children, you're sure to find something which the kids will enjoy putting together. Have fun!
