For starters, there's always food. Most people appreciate homemade candy and other sweets, whether they're cupcakes, fudge, cookies, or even Rice Krispy treats. One of the great things about making food as gifts is that not only does it taste good, but it's usable. You know that it won't simply gather dust in the corner of the room once you give it away. At least you hope it won't!
Although it does cost a little bit of money, photo albums are other good homemade gifts to make. Grandparents love pictures of their grandkids, so why not put together a photo album for them? You can either upload digital photos and create an album using a program like Shutterfly, or you can simply have some photos printed and place them in a traditional photo album.
You can also use photographs to make other gifts as well. Using online resources, photos can be turned into pillowcases, tote bags, throws, mugs, and even key chains. If you don't want to do anything online, then you can also use photos to create a scrapbook. This can be a special and meaningful way to commemorate a special time that you had with that person.

If you sew or knit, then an obvious choice might be something that the person can wear. Of course, your knitting doesn't have to result in a sweater. In fact, knitted handbags or tote bags are very popular and useful. Beautiful throws are also useful as well and look great if you can match the colors that the person has in their living room or bedroom.
If you have a lot of lovely flowers growing around your home, then a homemade flower arrangement can look just as good, and be more meaningful, than something that you would pay a lot of money for in a floral shop - these are certainly nice homemade gifts to make. Hang onto the vases that you receive flowers in, and then reuse them for your own homemade flower arrangements. In the fall, consider using tree branches with gorgeous fall leaves as part of the arrangement. In the wintertime, holly branches can look very pretty too.
If you have children and you want to make something for your parents or for a relative, then using your child's artwork can be a fun way of doing something creative with it. Grandparents love having mementos of their grandkids around the house, so why not frame a piece of their artwork and let them hang it up somewhere? Handprints can also look great when framed - these are interesting homemade gifts to make, too.
Just remember that being creative is about half of the process. Once you come up with a great idea, then implementing it is the easy part. When it comes to homemade gifts to make, you are restricted only by your imagination!
