Homemade Gifts in a Jar - Great Ideas for Presents

Are you seeking inspiration, tips and ideas for homemade gifts in a jar?

There are numerous occasions for a gift in a jar. This is particularly true during the holidays, for housewarmings, shut-ins, or the students leaving home for the first time.

The interesting thing about gifts in a jar is that they can range from the very simple - a cocoa mixture in an appropriate mug, to the very elaborate - everything in layers that is needed to prepare homemade cookies, cake or your favorite brownies. Just do not forget the nuts and chocolate chips!

There are a host of recipes suitable for homemade gifts in a jar - and not just the sweet stuff. Soup mixes make interesting gifts - the layers become quite colorful when mixing various types of beans or lentils, different spices, dehydrated vegetables, etc.

Bread mixes also do well for jar gifting - even those that require the addition of yeast. Choose a dough mix that does not require the yeast to be activated with hot water or a lot of kneading, such as an Italian flat bread. With the addition of bread topping mixture, such as Parmesan, tied festively around the top, the gift jar can look quite pleasing as it is passed from giver to recipient.

For those that are ill, a gift jar can be a godsend. It can be soup mix given along with a package of crackers and a bowl with a napkin. All these arranged in a basket, placed in a plastic bag and tied with an attractive bow present a great gift that is quite functional as well as pleasant looking. Homemade always goes beyond saying you care.

Most recipes can be adapted for homemade gifts in a jar, by layering dry ingredients in the jar (these should just be the ones for the basic batter). Type out a list of remaining ingredients (for instance: eggs, milk or butter) with instructions on how to mix and bake. Include this list with the decorated jar.

Good homemade gifts in a jar for a girlfriend who needs a pick me up and who is also a chocoholic might be something like chocolate / peanut butter bark. Unlike some of the recipes for jar gifting given to be prepared by the recipient, this one is already prepared. It can be completed in about 20 minutes and will let her know you are thinking about her as well as trigger her endorphins to give her a feeling of wellbeing.

So how do you make these delicious homemade gifts in a jar? Ingredients consist of 2 cups each of milk chocolate chips and peanut butter chips, and 1 cup of chopped peanuts (salted are best). After lining a cookie sheet with foil, melt 1 3/4 cups of the chocolate chips with all of the peanut butter chips over low heat in a large saucepan. Stir frequently until all is melted and smooth. (Microwave can be used also - on medium power for about 3 minutes. Stir at least once.)

Remove from heat and stir in remaining chips and nuts before spreading the mixture on the covered cookie sheet. Let harden for about an hour before breaking in pieces and placing in an airtight jar.

To finish off any jar for gifting, gather fabric scraps cut into 7" circles for large mouth jars and 6" for all others. Use scissors that leave a zig zag edge if you are not going to trim with lace (which can be sewed on or applied with a hot glue gun). Center fabric over the lid, securing with a precut piece of ribbon long enough to encompass the jar rim and still tie a pretty little bow. Wha La! Beautiful homemade gifts in a jar!
