Valentine's Day has long been heralded as a day for love and for expressing it, whether it be between friends, those falling in love or lovers already.

Over the years, thousands of creative minds have come up with ways to spend the day and express their affection for one another. Everything from getting married while bungee jumping off the highest point in the city to a quiet romantic dinner for two for couples, or school parties and exchanging humorous Valentine cards for youngsters.

With the current economic situation, much of the elaborate and / or costly has been cut out, but that by no means says our creativity has to be put on the back burner. And just because it is homemade doesn't mean it has to be heart cookies or dry roasted peanuts with chocolate poured over them.

Perhaps you don't have a lot of extra cash, but that doesn't mean you cannot go out and do something you both like to do. Like overnight camping with hot chocolate and extra marshmallows, romantic music and no one else around for miles, or a night out dancing with a few drinks and perhaps an appetizer. Often, unmarried couples choose this day to marry because it is a perfect day to have a quiet (non-huge or costly) affair in a backyard or park with just a few close friends and family. Or get together with other couples who want to marry and have a double or triple wedding, splitting the cost of the wedding and get together afterward. It is also a day for renewing wedding vows.

Guys are less apt to do homemade Valentine ideas - perhaps not because of lack of the creative thought but more of time and know how. There are homemade Valentine ideas a romantic man might do - fix dinner for his love, plan for a bottle of wine with alone time, maybe a video rental with her in mind rather than an action film or one sports oriented.

And many men cook very well - dinner for two at a candlelit table is a nice and simple homemade Valentine idea which oozes romance. Oh, and buy a couple of bunches of flowers with a large vase. At home, go through the individual flowers and put in the tallest ones first followed by the others; don't forget the single rose for the center of your bouquet. They can set on the table between the candles. What can be more romantic than that?

For women, there is always food as well. Men love their favorite dishes in a candlelit setting with wine and a lovely dessert. Perhaps a bowl of personalized M and M's at his end of the table to add to the effect - ones that simply say "I love you" or ones that have his name on them or his name with yours.
