Interesting Thanksgiving Stuffing Recipes to Try

When most people think of Thanksgiving, the traditional dinner comes to mind. One of the most anticipated features of this favorite holiday meal is the stuffing. With the easy availability of cooking shows and the Food Network, you are now offered a variety of stuffing options.

Traditionally, bread stuffing has been a Thanksgiving staple. In order to prepare bread stuffing, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 8-10 cups of bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup butter (or margarine)
  • 1 cup onion (chopped)
  • 1/2 cup celery (chopped) (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning (you may substitute sage, savory, thyme and marjoram)
  • Hot chicken or turkey broth.

For this Thanksgiving stuffing recipe, melt your butter in a frying pan, saute the onion and celery, add your seasonings and bread crumbs and blend well with the hot broth. This should be enough to stuff an 8-10 pound turkey. If you do not wish to cook your stuffing inside the turkey, you can put it in a greased 9" square pan and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes or until the top is browned.

You can use a store bought stuffing mix as a base to create a tasty and satisfying treat for you and your family. You will need the following ingredients:

  • 2 six ounce packages of dry bread stuffing mix
  • 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef (you may use sausage or ground turkey if you prefer)
  • 1/2 chopped onions
  • 1/4 teaspoon chopped garlic
  • 3 large potatoes, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 four ounce jars pimento peppers
  • 1/2 cup chopped black olives
  • 1/4 cup sweet pickles (finely chopped)
  • 1/4 cup diced pickles diced
  • (You may also add green olives, bacon bits or nuts or seeds to this Thanksgiving stuffing recipe for added color and flavor).

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking pan. Prepare stuffing according to package directions. Over medium-low heat in a large skillet brown beef, onions and garlic until the onions are soft and the beef is evenly browned. Drain and set aside. Place oil and potatoes in skillet and brown potatoes until they are evenly cooked but still firm.

Now mix your potatoes, beef mixture, prepared stuffing, peppers, olives and pickles (and any other ingredients you wish to add) and place in your baking dish. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes. Serve hot.

When it comes to making your Thanksgiving dressing, be creative. You can add a number of ingredients to the traditional recipe to give it your own special flavor.

Some things that can be added to the traditional recipe include black or green olives, pecans, cheeses, and croutons. Thanksgiving dinner is a time to show off your culinary talents and provide your family with a nutritious, satisfying meal.
