Invitation Wording Etiquette - Important Pointers and Information

Do you need some help with invitation wording etiquette?

If you are planning a party in the near future, there are several things that you will need to know about invitation wording etiquette that will assist you in sending out the very best invitation that you can.

After all, you don't want to send out sloppy, boring invites that shout, "Come to my boring party!" do you? No, you want your invitations to scream, "YOU HAVE TO COME TO THIS AWESOME PARTY!"

The first thing that you need to be aware of regarding invitations is that you should send out the invitations about 8 weeks prior to the party. This may seem like too far in advance for some of you, but realistically, people plan their calendars a couple of months in advance, especially in the summer months and holiday periods. The more time you can give people, the more likely they will be able to make it to the party. This also forces you to get an early start in party preparation, which will be beneficial for the party.

The second important factor in invitation wording etiquette is to be specific and detailed with the party information. If you've ever received an invitation that lacks vital information, such as, "No children allowed", and brought yours to the party and wide eyes stared you down all evening as your children ran around, then this is close to your heart.

Be sure to state WHO the party is for, WHAT the occasion is for (birthday, wedding, baby shower, graduation, etc.), WHEN the party is to occur (the date and time) and WHERE the party is to be held. Regarding the WHERE, include both the name of the building or home, as well as the street address. You can always include directions too if you'd like.

As part of proper invitation wording etiquette, when writing the invites, spell out entire names and do not use abbreviations. You can also include details such as:

  • The name of the host and his / her phone number.
  • The time the party will end.
  • Whether or not there will be alcohol.
  • The kind of attire one should wear.
  • Whether or not children are welcomed.
  • If the person receiving the party is registered at a store for gifts.
  • Whether gifts should be brought at all.
  • Whether the party will be catered and, if so, will there be a meal or simply snacks?

Be sure to indicate clearly to the guests if the party will be indoors or outdoors. I once went to a party that I thought was indoors, but it ended up being outside and I did not bring a jacket, so I was feeling very cold and ended up leaving early.

Another consideration for invitation wording etiquette is the tone of the invites. You may opt to use formal or casual wording in your invitations, depending on the event. For weddings, it is traditional to use formal wording, but for birthday parties or baby showers, it is fine to use casual wording. You can handwrite the invitation or utilize a printer to print the information on the invitations, as both are quite acceptable for invitation wording etiquette.

Remember to enjoy the whole experience of creating invitations and be sure to give your creative side a try as you prepare them. Some people will keep your invitations as keepsakes, and that ought to give you a delightful feeling of satisfaction.
