Ideas for Valentine's Crafts - Fun Projects for Nice Gifts

Are you seeking ideas and inspiration for some fun Valentine's crafts?

Valentine's Day is one of those days when home crafted gifts are welcomed by family and friends alike. Involve your children and introduce them to the art of making some of these Valentine's crafts; none of them are too difficult for little ones to make with the assistance of an adult.

Valentine heart bookmark

For this, you will need:

  • Felt in red or pink - or both, if you wish
  • Eight to ten inches of 1/4" wide pink, red or white ribbon for each bookmark
  • White glue
  • Sequins or beads

Using heart-shaped cookie cutters as guides, trace two 3" hearts onto the felt and cut out carefully. Trace and cut out two more smaller hearts. You will need to cut four hearts for each bookmark so that you can make the ribbon connector invisibly sandwiched between them. The hearts can be any size you wish, but make sure they're large enough to decorate with sequins or beads.

When the hearts are decorated to your satisfaction, place a dab of glue on one large heart and glue the ribbon firmly onto it, then take the other large heart and glue directly over the first one. Do the same with the smaller hearts and allow to dry thoroughly. Now you have some cute bookmarks for the children to give to family and friends for Valentine's Day gifts.

A similar Valentine's craft project is to make lavender or potpourri sachets which will give a nice fragrance to linens, towels or clothes drawers. Simply draw two large 5" or 6" hearts using the cookie cutters as a guide - you could make one side pink and the other red or have both sides the same color - then decorate by gluing or sewing on beads and sequins.

Glue the bottom two-thirds of one heart and firmly (and carefully) stick the two together, leaving the top third open to allow you to insert the lavender or potpourri. Do not overfill them. Carefully glue the top of the heart closed and apply pressure until completely dry.

While this one isn't strictly a Valentine's craft, it's a cute idea to use instead of a Valentine card. You will need some candy bars and some plain manila luggage tags (purchased at the office supply store). Decorate the luggage tags with ribbons, sequins, stickers - whatever is suitable for the recipient, and write your Valentine's message on them. Fasten to the candy bar with double sided tape.

Another of the Valentine's crafts you can easily make with children is a Tootsie Pop flower. For this Valentine's craft, you will need a selection of Tootsie Pops, tissue paper in red, pink and white or in colors to match the lollipops, and some green card stock for making 'leaves' where you can write your Valentine message.

If you don't have a large scalloped circle punch, simply cut out a flower shape through several layers of tissue using sharp scissors. Poke a hole through the center of several layers of tissue and insert the lollipop into the hole. Cut the leaves out of the green card stock and make a very small hole in one end. To assemble, place the lollipop through the layers of tissue paper and then through the hole in the leaf. Use a dab of white glue if necessary to make it all hold together.

You can also use your Valentine's craft skills to make a keepsake box by purchasing a heart- shaped wooden box at the craft store and covering it with fabric or ribbon - or just painting it red or pink. Add a jewel or photo to the lid and trim with lace or pearls. Fill it with candy or a special keepsake.
