Valentine's Day Projects - Crafts Which Make Great Gifts

Are you looking for some fun Valentine's Day projects to carry out? These Valentine crafts make great gifts!

While a bouquet of flowers and a big box of chocolates are a nice gift for Valentine's Day, a more personal offering might be something that has been hand made by the gift giver.

An easy Valentine's Day project would be to make the recipient's favorite cookies and present them as a "Cookie Bouquet". Simply make the cookie recipe and cut out the dough in either heart or flower shapes, then bake.

Have ready some florist wire that you have wrapped with green florist tape - you can choose to make them "long-stem" flowers and present them in a long florist's box, or make the stems shorter and place in a red glass vase. Insert the wire "stems" into the cookies while they are still warm and allow to cool completely. Decorate the cookies with icing or frosting if you wish and place in the box or vase. This is a great project for the kids!

A plain terracotta plant pot decorated with acrylic paints is another easy Valentine's Day project for anyone to make. Choose a pot and paint flowers, hearts or a simple design on it. You can fill it with soil and plant seeds in it or offer the empty pot with a packet of seeds for a plant that you know the recipient will enjoy. Wrap the pot with colored cellophane and tie with a bow. Add your gift card and you're finished!

A more complicated Valentine's Day project for a Valentine gift is a plain glass candle holder decorated with beads. This can also be made by children, but they will need some help with this one.

For this Valentine's Day project, purchase a clear glass candle holder, enough clear or white glass beads to cover the candle holder for the background, and some red or pink beads for the decoration - which could be hearts or flowers, or both.

A hot glue gun is the best for this project, but if you are working with children, then regular white glue will work just as well - just make sure that the glue you use will be clear when it dries.

Make sure the candle holder is clean and dry, then draw your designs onto the sides - small and large versions of the same design look the best, such as one large heart or flower and two smaller ones.

Fill in the designs with the colored beads, making sure that they are firmly glued, then complete the white or clear background. Make sure this entire Valentine's Day project is completely dry before using with a candle or tea light inside.

Ribbon heart wreath

Need more ideas for Valentine's Day projects?

For those of you who like to decorate your front door or hallway for holidays, this ribbon heart wreath made from a heart-shaped foam form and ribbon flowers is a very pretty item to add to your collection. This Valentine's project is probably best suited to adults because you will be using a hot glue gun.

For this Valentine's Day project, you will need:

  • 25 yards of 1" wide ribbon in red and 25 yards of pink - try to choose a ribbon that won't fray. If it does, use Fray Check to prevent the threads from unraveling.
  • Sewing machine and matching thread
  • One heart-shaped floral foam form
  • Red or pink acrylic paint.
  • Additional 2 yards of ribbon in the color of your choice to make a hanger

Here are the instructions for this Valentine's Day project:

  • Paint the heart-shaped form in red or pink and allow it to dry thoroughly.

  • Cut the ribbon into 18" strips (you can make these longer or shorter, but bear in mind that shorter ribbon lengths will make smaller roses, and longer lengths will make larger ones.)

  • Use a long basting stitch on your sewing machine and sew down each strip approximately 1/4 inch from one edge. Gently pull on the top edge and gather up slightly. Tie off the ends of the thread.

  • Fold in the first 1/4" of the gathered ribbon and glue, then continue to roll the ribbon into a "flower", gluing as you go until you have completed one rose, but make sure you open out the top edge of the ribbon to make an open flower.

  • Make up the rest of the roses in the same manner.

  • Begin to attach the roses to the heart by gluing them one at a time on the top of the form first, alternating the colors if you are using red and pink. When these are dry, glue the rest of the roses to the "inside" and "outside" of the heart, trying to cover the foam form completely.

  • Attach the ribbon hanger by folding over the ends to the inside and gluing in place. You can cut the ribbon in two if you wish, and make a bow at the top of the hanger. Allow to dry completely before hanging.
